Abstract

Konstantin Dorimedontovich Pokrovsky (1868-1944) – a famous astronomer, teacher, organizer and popularizer of science; Director of the Tartu Observatory (1908-1915), Deputy Director of the Pulkovo Observatory (1930-1932), Rector of Perm University (1916-1918), Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1927).

Pokrovsky was a multi-faceted scientist, his research concerned both theoretical and experimental astronomy. He studied comets and their connection with meteor showers; he developed methods of celestial mechanics for determining the orbits of cloud formations in comet tails; he carried out observations of lunar occultations of stars and investigated the motion of the Earth's pole, major and minor planets.
