The Milky Way is our Galaxy
Abstract
A band of light encircling the sky that we observe in the summer-autumn night sky is called the Milky Way (Fig. 1). The name Milky Way is loan translated from Latin via lactea – "the milky way", which, in turn, is a translation from the ancient Greek "the milky circle". This expression goes back to the ancient Greek legend about the goddess Hera’s milk that was splashed when she breastfed Hercules. The Milky Way is not just a designation for the visible stars that comprise the Milky Way for an observer, it is also the name of our galaxy – the Milky Way or the Galaxy.
