The Milky Way is our Galaxy
Abstract
A band of light that we observe in the night summer-autumn sky, encircling the sky with a wide ring, is called the Milky Way (Fig. 1). The name Milky Way is a loan translation from Latin “via lactea” – "milky road", which, in turn, is a translation from ancient Greek "milky circle". This expression goes back to the ancient Greek legend about the goddess Hera’s milk, which Hercules was breastfed. The Milky Way is not just a designation for the visible stars that comprise the Milky Way for an observer, it is also the name of our galaxy – the Milky Way or the Galaxy.
